This city also has a rich fishing tradition, specializing in shellfish, with culinary favorite the lobster roll invented right here in town back in the 1920s. Milford still supports a commercial clamming fleet to this day, while city seafood traditions are maintained during the annual Milford Oyster Festival, a fiesta that includes food stands, boat races and music. Also on offer near downtown Milford are the Milford Boat Works, a large marina with extensive dry storage and boat repair services, and the publicly owned Lisman Landing Marina, a 35-slip bolthole and a good option for the budget-conscious. As you make your way south out of the harbor and toward the Sound keep your eyes peeled for the Simon Lake Submersible, a scuttled historic submarine from the 1930’s that acts as local icon, river obstacle and impromptu tide marker.
Along the Housatonic River that demarcates the western edge of Milford there are a couple of other marinas, with the Caswell Cove Marina offering 70 slips in a large protected marina and the Valley Yacht Club featuring dozens of floating wet-slips, club-house amenities and even an on-site brewery. There’s a host of popular races and regattas held in Milford year-round, including the Arms-White Regatta and the Columbus Day Regatta, while the Viper 640 Long Island Sound Open is sometimes operated out of the Milford Yacht Club.
