The Viking 82C is an 83-foot convertible sportfishing yacht that was launched by New Jersey-based Viking Yachts in 2008. One of the largest sportfishing yachts around, this boat combines tournament-ready fishing credentials and blistering speed with the sort of comfort and spaciousness that weekend cruisers will adore. Though no longer produced to order at the Viking facility in New Gretna, NJ, this immensely popular model still holds its allure on the used and charter markets.
Viking 82 News:
While many fishing yachts can be fitted with off-the-shelf tuna towers installed by third parties, the Viking 82C benefits from the option of a bespoke tuna tower that is provided by Viking subsidiary Palm Beach Towers to turn it into the ultimate fishing machine. Even without such an addition this yacht is bound to impress serious billfish hunters with an aft-cockpit measuring some 255-square feet. This dedicated fishing space comes complete with a transom door and lift gate, tackle and gear storage, a custom deep-freezer, a live-well, fish boxes, flush rod holders, salt and fresh-water spigots and a floor plate for the fighting chair or rocket launcher of your choice. Also back here is a multi-tiered mezzanine level with a four-seater leather sofa and a drinks cooler.
One level up and you will find a spacious sportsbridge with either an open-top aspect or a fiberglass hard-top with transparent Costa Clear protection for elevated piloting. The bridge features Viking’s signature walk-around helm station with instrumentation installed by Atlantic Marine Electronics, with everything from a teak helm pod and VIPER steering to Garmin displays, CCTV feedback and hydraulic thruster controls. On the open top model, the helm sits aft with a cocoon-style seating area positioned forward, while on the enclosed model the helm sits forward with an L-shaped sofa and a coffee table at the rear. On both models the bridge is open at the back, with an aft-helm station that is ideal for using in marina settings.
The main deck salon on this model raises the bar for style, luxury and comfort aboard a sportfishing yacht, with plush upholstery, glossy teak surfaces, leather furnishings and panoramic wrap-around windows. Upon entry you will find a hook-shaped sofa to port sitting across from a day-head, while at the front there is a walk-in galley kitchen and a U-shaped dining sofa with a breakfast table. The galley features granite worktops, a cocktail bar with three stools, an electric hob, Sub-Zero under-counter fridge and freezer units and a combination oven. At the front of the main deck cockpit are a pair of storage rooms that can be used as pantries or equipment storage rooms.
The Viking 82C hosts five en-suite cabins on the lower deck without ever feeling cramped, a real rarity in the world of fishing yachts. A single and a twin berth located amidship are joined by a pair of master staterooms towards the bow for up to 7 overnight guests, and two more can stay in the show-stopping, full-beam owner’s stateroom. This palatial room benefits from hull windows, a corner sofa, maple-lined hanging closets, a king-sized island bed, bedside tables and a bathroom with granite counters, Amtico flooring and a fiberglass shower cubicle.
The real test for a yacht of this size was making sure it moved as quickly and as nimbly as smaller sportfishing boats. Thankfully, this is a test that has been passed with flying colors. A proprietary planing hull is convex forward with a 10-degree deadrise and a curved transom for a soft, balanced and efficient ride. Engines, meanwhile, start with MAN V12s that are fitted as standard, though many buyers opt for the more powerful CAT C32A twin diesels or a pair of MTU 16V M93 2400MHP engines for extra power. Should you opt for the latter and more costly engines then you can expect top speeds of 38 knots and comfortable cruising of around 26 knots. At this lower speed you will be happy to know that the Viking 82C has an ocean-going range of 676 nautical miles, more than enough to chase that elusive marlin all the way to the Bahamas.
