The Viking 74C is a 74-foot convertible sportfishing yacht with a flybridge that was launched by Viking Yachts back in 2004. Though no longer produced as a new model at the Viking facility in New Jersey, the 74C remains a popular choice on the used and charter markets due to a combination of its undeniable tournament fishing credentials, endless adaptability and luxurious accommodation.
Just announced, Viking has released a brand new 74 Convertible for 2024 that will make its debut at the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show.
The Viking 74C, as with all of Viking’s fishing boats, can come fitted with a custom-made tuna tower provided by Viking subsidiary Palm Beach Towers, to turn this into a peerless fish hunting machine. But even without a tower there are plenty of fishing essentials to be found aboard this yacht, not least in the teak-lined, 218-square foot aft-cockpit. This space has been fine-tuned around catching and hauling big fish, and features essentials such as a transom door with a lift gate, livewells, bait freezers, gear storage, flush rod holders, an Eskimo ice-chipper, salt and fresh-water hoses and a floor plate for the installation of a bespoke Murray fighting chair and rocket launcher. The double-tier mezzanine level out here also hosts a water-proof sofa, a drinks chiller and an electric grill, making it the ideal space to down a few beers and grill your catch.
One level up and you will find an open flybridge with a fiberglass hard-top and the main, walk-around helm station. The upper bridge on any Viking Yacht is truly a work of art. The controls up here have been installed by Atlantic Marine Electronics and feature gadgets such as Furuno radar, a Northstar chart-plotter, Hot Eye night-vision, CCTV screens, power-assisted steering, bow thruster controls and a teak helm pod, all facing an adjustable leather helm chair. There is also room up here for a forward seating area with a pair of side chaise-longues and curved sofas, making it a great place to hang out with the captain. Should you wish to pilot your vessel in more northerly climes then the bridge is also available as an enclosed space with an L-shaped sofa, cabinetry and a set of aft-controls for docking.
A breath-taking main deck salon really sets the Viking 74C apart from its competitor yachts by delivering the sort of style, elegance and comfort usually only found on Italian super-yachts. Glossy teak and walnut surrounds are matched with plush upholstery, Fabrica carpeting and leather furnishings for a sedate feel that harks back to the golden age of yachting. There is a hook-shaped sofa and a burl-accented coffee table to starboard, with curved cabinets and space for an HD TV to port, and as you move forwards you will find a U-shaped dining sofa and table sitting across from a walk-in galley. The galley impresses with granite worktops, a cocktail bar with three stools, a four-zone hob, a combination oven, Sub-Zero refrigeration units and an under-mounted sink.
There are four en-suite staterooms on the lower level of this yacht, though buyers have the option of adding a further single cabin to bring the total overnight capacity to 9 guests. A pair of bunk-cabins are joined by two double staterooms, with the amidship owner’s suite boasting a corner sofa, bed-side cabinets, maple-lined hanging closets and a bathroom with Corian counters, a fiberglass shower stall and Amtico flooring.
Standard engines on the Viking 74C are a pair of MTU V12s, though upgrades to MTU V16 engines or a pair of CAT C32A diesels are also available. Should you go with the most powerful option then you can expect top speeds of almost 37 knots and cruising speeds of around 30 knots. A tank-tested hull with a shallow keel and a moderate entry gives this yacht the agility and balance of a much smaller vessel, proving that one does not have to sacrifice tuna-chasing ability for increased space on a sportfishing yacht. A fuel tank holding 9,521 liters of diesel, meanwhile, gives the 74C an enviable range of 644 nautical miles even at peak cruising speeds, across both blue-water and inshore bodies of water.
