The Viking 50C is a 50-foot convertible sportfishing yacht launched in 2008 by Viking Yachts, the award-winning New Jersey-based yacht building firm. The original 50C was released in 1991 and became so popular that Viking built more than a dozen models per year across a decade. The new 50C is a much-changed yacht from that vintage vessel, with faster engines, a sleeker look, a modified hull and updated electronics, yet it still sports signature Viking qualities such as undeniable fishing prowess, superb build quality and a graceful style.
This yacht can come fitted with a Palm Beach tuna tower for elevated piloting, though superb visibility is also available to captains who choose to command their vessel from the 50C’s open flybridge. There is a fiberglass helm console attached to port up here with a pair of teak-and-leather Murray or Release Marine helm chairs and instrumentation fitted by Viking subsidiary Atlantic Marine Electronics. The dashboard features Side Power bow thrusters, Moritz Octoplex monitoring, Furuno display panels, VHF radio and SeaStar power-assisted steering mounted on a teak helm pod. There is also plenty of space up here for a snug forward lounge with views out across the bow, featuring a side chaise-longue, a leather loveseat and an integral drinks chiller.
One level down and you will find a 132-square foot aft-cockpit that has been fine-tuned around the serious business of competitive sport-fishing. A transom door with a walk-thru gate is large enough to haul record-breaking marlin aboard should you be lucky or skilled enough to catch them, while this space also hosts flush rod holders, gaff storage, a live-well, a tackle cabinet, fresh and raw-water hoses, fish boxes, an Eskimo ice-chipper, a freezer, Rupp Outriggers, Glendinning Cablemasters and a floor plate for a fighting chair. Should you need to take a break from all that fishing then the cockpit also features a partially shaded mezzanine level with a plush Sunbrella sofa and a drinks chiller.
Viking are famed for the classic styling and unimpeachable comfort found on the internal spaces of their yachts, and the 50C shows why. The main deck salon is a symphony of glossy teak surrounds, pale Amtico flooring, plush leather furnishings and hand-finished cabinetry, all generously lit thanks to panoramic side windows and recessed lighting. To port there are a pair of L-shaped sofas, one a low-slung lounger surrounding a coffee table and the other a more formal affair hugging a Hi-Lo dining table. To starboard you will find plenty of storage space and the walk-in L-shaped galley kitchen with Corian work surfaces, a cocktail island with a pair of stools, a 3-zone Kenyon hob, a Tappan convection oven, under-counter Sub-Zero fridge-freezer units and a stainless-steel sink. The Viking 50C hosts lower-deck space for up to 6 overnight guests across 3 staterooms, with a pair of twin berths complementing a luxurious master stateroom with a queen-sized bed, beside cabinets, maple-lined hanging closets and a large en-suite.
Top speeds in excess of 40 knots are delivered by a pair of MAN V12 1360CRM diesel inboard engines, with comfortable cruising speeds in the mid-30 knot range. At lower speeds of 11 knots, meanwhile, you can expect a range of over 570 nautical miles, more than enough to take you out into tuna-rich waters. The Viking 50C’s proprietary hull features a fine convex section forward, a 12-degree deadrise to transom and a flat aft section for a dry, efficient and balanced ride in a range of conditions.
