The Viking 48 Convertible is a 49-foot cpen sportfishing yacht that was newly re-launched by the New Jersey boat building firm in 2016. Combining serious tournament credentials with the sort of finish and space that families require for weekend cruising, the Viking 48C is a yacht that is close to the hearts of the Viking team, and one that represents the evolution of this renowned company. This is because the original iteration of the 48C was launched way back in 1985, re-launched again in 2002, and radically overhauled one final time to bring one of the most popular sportfishing boats ever built into the modern age.
A striking, aerodynamic profile is bound to draw admiring glances in any marina, while captains will love taking charge on the elevated hard-top flybridge. Up here there is room for a pair of side chaise-longues either side of a walk-around helm station with a pair of teak and leather clad Release Marine piloting chairs. The dashboard features a glazed teak wheel fixture, navigational equipment from Garmin and a set up that has been fine tuned for the tournament experience by Atlantic Marine Electronics. The boat can also be fitted with a Palm Beach tuna tower above the bridge to turn this into an unbeatable fishing machine.
Port-side ladder access leads back down to a teak-lined aft-cockpit with a split tiered seating area that hosts a three-seater leather sofa with cup holders and hidden storage. The cockpit measures some 124-square feet, large enough to haul your prize marlins onto deck, and comes with a transom door and lift gate, a bait cooler, flush rod storage, a fish box and live well, fresh and saltwater nozzles, and a floor plate for the attachment of your own rocket launcher or fighting chair.
The indoor cockpit, designed by William Bales, elevates the Viking 48C from mere utilitarian fishing boat to luxurious family cruiser, and is lined in either hand-finished teak or walnut with finely stitched carpeting and leather furnishings for a classy and sedate feel. Upon entry you will discover an L-shaped sofa with a matching coffee table to starboard and plenty of cabinet space to port, while positioned amidship is a large U-shaped dining sofa and breakfast table. In a departure from the norm, this model features a galley kitchen on the main deck for easy food service. The kitchen features Cambrian worktops, a cocktail bar, a combination oven, a two-zone induction hob, refrigeration and plenty of storage.
The cockpit seamlessly flows towards the lower deck accommodate space with just a few steps leading you into a set of luxurious retreats. An amidship master stateroom features a queen-sized island bed with bedside cabinets and an en suite bathroom with quartz counters and a fiberglass shower cubicle. There are two further bedrooms on this level, including a port side single berth and a bunk room with two Pullmans nestled up toward the bow that share a Jack-and-Jill bathroom with a shower.
The Viking 48C can reach top speeds of up to 38 knots, and enjoy comfortable cruising at 30 knots, thanks to a pair of MAN V8 1200MHP diesel engines. The yacht also boasts power steering, bow thrusters and a proprietary hull with a raked entry, molded strakes and a forward chine to deliver a ride of peerless power, balance and agility. Marlins of the world should also be aware that this vessel comes equipped with a tank holding 1,190 gallons of fuel, so there is little chance they will be able to outlast, much less outpace, this superb fishing yacht.
