The Viking 42ST is a 42-foot sportfishing yacht with an enclosed command deck that was produced by the New Jersey-based yacht building company between 2011 and 2016. Along with the 42ST’s sister yacht, the 42 Open, this was the smallest boat produced at that time by Viking, not to mention the first vessel in their fleet to boast cutting-edge, hi-tech Zeus pod-drive engines for greater efficiency and maneuverability. Though no longer in production, the 42ST remains a top-selling boat on the used and charter markets thanks to its sleek style, luxuriously-appointed interior and tournament fishing credentials.
While many sportfishers can be fitted with off-the-shelf tuna towers provided by third parties, the 42ST can come equipped with a tower installed by Viking subsidiary Palm Beach Towers for a tournament-ready finish. Though even without elevated piloting there is still superb visibility from the command deck helm, with crystal-clear views out of the front, wrap-around wind-shield windows. This center-console, walk-around helm comes with three teak-and-leather Release Marine chairs and electronics installed by Atlantic Marine Electronics. Goodies include a teak helm-pod, SmartCraft VesselView monitors, a couple of Garmin GPS screens, power-steering, a Mercury SmartCraft joystick, thruster controls and VHF radio. Also to be found in the command deck are a pair of side chaise-longues and a forward sofa.
Out the back there is a 120-square foot aft-cockpit that has been custom designed around the competitive fishing experience. The cockpit features essentials such as a transom door with a lift gate, transom swim steps, a Glendinning Cablemaster, a plumb transom box, a 60-gallon livewell, an Eskimo ice-chipper, recessed storage boxes, grabrails, flush rod holders, tackle and bait trays as well as a floor plate for a fighting chair or rocket launcher. Standard on all Viking 42ST yachts is also a mezzanine level with a pair of Sunbrella sofas with hidden storage beneath the cushions.
This may be among the smaller yachts that Viking offers, but it certainly doesn’t feel that way as guests make their way to the lower deck level through a water-tight companionway door. A spacious lobby with Amtico floors and teak surrounds hosts an L-shaped dining sofa with a table to port, with a U-shaped walk-in galley to starboard. The galley features Corian work surfaces, brushed nickel fixtures, a two-zone hob, a combination microwave, fridge-freezer units and a large sink. There is a master stateroom to the bow with a queen-sized bed, maple-lined lockers, plush carpeting and access to a private bathroom with a shower. Because the Zeus pod-drives take up less room than conventional diesel engines there is also a recessed space to the aft of the lower deck that can be turned into a twin cabin with a pair of Pullmans, or used as a cocoon-style retreat with a U-shaped sofa.
A modified V-hull with a 16.5-degree aft deadrise proves hugely efficient, quick and dry in bluewater conditions, while the Cummins QSC8.3 Zeus pod-drive engines provide top speeds of around 37 knots at full throttle. At the more stately cruising speed of just over 8 knots, meanwhile, this vessel has a range of almost 1000 nautical miles, thanks to a fuel tank holding some 525 gallons of diesel.
