The Viking 38 Open is a 38-foot sportfishing yacht that was launched by the New Jersey boat building company in 2019. An upgrade on the popular Viking 37, this yacht shares many of the same design elements as the Viking 38, but features an open cockpit with a main-deck helm station, and a custom tuna tower instead of a flybridge. One of the most compact vessels produced by Viking, this yacht nevertheless has made a huge impression in the ultra-competitive market for tournament-ready sportfishing boats thanks to its high-performance running, immense practicality and sleek, polished style. The 38 Open is a different model than the 38 Billfish.
While most sportfishing builders opt to install an off-the-shelf tuna tower on their boats, at Viking the tuna towers are made by the firm’s own specialist subsidiary, Palm Beach Towers, and are customized to each individual boat to enhance both the fishing and driving experience. The 38 Open features a two-tiered tower with twin stainless steel side ladders providing easy and intuitive access. The upper level features a comfortable chair from which to begin your pelagic pursuits, plenty of protective railing and can even be fitted with an elevated helm station should you require it.
A level or two down and the aft-cockpit hosts some 109-square foot of dedicated fishing space for those serious about pursuing record-breaking marlin, and has been expertly crafted for the utmost in practicality. Out goes teak flooring and in comes an easily hosed-down fiberglass space with a transom fish box, a live bait well with pumped water access, a transom door, port and starboard fish boxes, tackle storage, rod holders and a deck plate for the installation of a custom rocket launcher or fighting chair. Of course, even the most determined fisher or angler needs to take a seat now and again, and the cockpit also features a pair of leather-topped mezzanine seats nestled against the cockpit dividing walls. The internal cockpit remains open to the elements at the rear though it can be fitted with optional protective glazing. There are two L-shaped side sofas in here for guests to relax, as well as a pair of helm seats facing a centrally located helm station that is equipped with Palm Beach-style dashboard and electronics provided by Viking subsidiary Atlantic Marine Electronics. Wrap-around glazing, slightly open towards the rear, provides unparalleled visibility, while a water-tight door at the front leads to the lower-deck rooms.
Though primarily marketed as a day boat, the Viking 38 Open provides an edge on the competition with the provision of ample leisure and rest space below deck, including an overnight bedroom tucked in towards the bow. Here you will find a pair of bunk beds and a closet, directly adjoining a lower dinette with a sofa, the kitchen galley and a main head with a shower. Below deck spaces feature polished teak, Antico flooring, satin-finished nickel joinery and Corian worktops for a plush feel rarely found on vessels in this class.
The Viking 38 Open is also a tremendous mover out on the water, and features a modified V-hull that performs as well in blue-water conditions as it does on placid inshore waterways. A pair of Cummins QSB 6.1 550MHP inboard engines deliver top speeds of 36 knots, two knots faster than its sister yacht the Viking 38 thanks to a reduced overall tonnage. A Seakeeper SK 6 Gyro stabilizer keeps this yacht balanced as you wait around for a bite, while the use of bow thrusters, a Cummins joystick and power-assisted steering makes this a superbly nimble ride.
