The Princess V85 is an 85-foot sports yacht first launched in 2008 and still in production today. Sleek European lines, refined interiors, a Bernard Olesinski designed deep V-hull and creative input from Princess Yacht’s American partner Viking make this vessel a perennially popular mid-sized motoryacht. Since 2010 the V85 has been offered alongside its sister yacht, the V85S, which shares the same exquisite overall design but with more powerful engines, a revamped main deck layout and an upgraded materials specification.
The V85 boasts a compact flybridge with upper helm-station that is large enough to fit in a two-seater leather sofa to port and another to the rear. The flybridge can come with either a hard-top or open roof with the option of a Bimini cover. One level down and we find an aft-deck that is dominated by a huge, three-seater sunbed with headrests that hides a transom tender garage with space for up to two modern water toys. The teak-lined aft deck features a U-shaped sofa and extendable table to transom as well as an electric grill or teppanyaki plate and wet bar facilities to port. A lower, hydraulic swimming platform with passerelle occupies the full-beam of the stern, and is bound to be popular with those who enjoy saltwater swimming. Side-decks enclosed with stainless steel guardrails lead towards an elongated foredeck with a triple-pad, modular Movida sunbed and a sofa fitted snugly into a Portuguese Bridge.
The 39 foot, single-level internal cockpit on the V85’s main deck features a retractable sunroof across the helm station, with triple skylights allowing natural light to stream in even when it is closed. The lower helm station is equipped with all the latest gadgets the modern captain needs to navigate his or her craft, including a complete electronics system from Furuno. The cockpit features dynamic, curved windows across its walls for a modern and airy feel, while triple-panel sliding glass doors to the rear reinforce the sense of free-flowing space across the entire main deck. Interior walls and floors are decked out in light oak or darker wenge wood, with optional upholstery and leather finishes sourced from Princess Yachts’s opulent parent company LVMH. There is space in the salon for a pair of L-shaped sofas, fitted cabinets and a dining table, while integrated HD TVs and a Bose surround sound system ensure plenty of entertainment should the weather force you inside. There is also the option when buying new to fit a galley kitchen on the main deck should you so wish to rustle up meals while hosting.
The V85’s standard galley is positioned below deck and features sparkling granite or sleek Avonite counters, a pub-style fridge-freezer, Miele appliances and plenty of cooking equipment. Downstairs bathrooms are lavishly kitted out with marble counters and mosaic walls for a sumptuous day-spa atmosphere, while showers are large enough to fit in bathing benches. The V85 comes with four staterooms as standard, including a full-beam, below-helm master bedroom with loveseat, work desk and a full-sized ensuite bath. This suite benefits from the use of four-paned mullioned windows for views out over the rippling waters. A further stateroom to the bow, a pair of twin cabins and crew space towards the rear means that the Princess V85 can accommodate up to eight guests and three crew overnight.
The original V85 comes fitted with either twin MTU 16V or Caterpillar C32A engines for top speeds in the range of 35 knots, while the V85S boasts twin MTU M94 engines with increased horsepower and a full throttle speed that almost reaches 40 knots. At lower cruising speeds of around 24 knots this yacht has a range of some 300 nautical miles and a fuel tank of 1320 gallons, more than enough for long weekend cruises to the islands of the Aegean or Caribbean Seas. While most will opt for a qualified pilot to command this yacht, whoever takes charge of the helm will enjoy utilising hydraulic stern and bow thrusters to nimbly manoeuvre their way into tricky marinas and coves, while prop pocket additions on the newer models decrease drag for a more fuel-efficient ride.
