The Princess 49 is a 51-foot flybridge sportcruiser that packs plenty of leisure space into its compact layout. First launched in 2016 and still in production to this day, the 49 is the first Princess yacht to switch to innovative internal pod-drive engines for super-charged performance.
Owner-operators will doubtlessly make a beeline to the open flybridge to pilot their yacht from a supremely elevated position. Two leather helm chairs to starboard have superb, 360-degree visibility, protection from spray thanks to a wrap-around windshield, and the use of power-steering and all navigational controls. The flybridge can be fitted with a Bimini top for extra shelter, though should you wish to soak up the sun’s rays there is plenty of lounging space, including a C-shaped leather sofa to port and a U-shaped fitted sofa to the rear that surrounds a teak dining table. Hosting a party from the flybridge is no problem, either, with a wet-bar console that includes an icemaker and an electric barbecue grill.
One level down has just as many outdoor options. A twin-pad Movida sunbed on the foredeck, a transom sofa on the teak-lined aft deck and a full-beam hydraulic swimming platform provide great spots to relax or to set off on swimming or watersports jaunts. Triple sliding glass doors on the aft lead you directly into the cockpit galley, where a three-zone ceramic hob, sink, fridge and convection oven are set into an Avonite or Carrera worktop. The salon, meanwhile, is a compact space lined in Rovere oak, Alba oak or American walnut and is large enough to fit in a broad, U-shaped leather sofa to port and a loveseat to starboard. Double helm seats at the lower cockpit controls, as well as step access downstairs complete the internal main deck offering.
Despite the limited deck length the Princess 49 manages to fit in three spacious lower deck bedrooms, including a showpiece, full-beam amidship master stateroom with widescreen, single-pane windows, a queen-sized bed, loveseat, vanity table and lavish ensuite. The ensuite forward stateroom hosts a double that can be turned into scissor beds, while a further bunk berth brings the occupancy level to 6 overnight guests.
The Princess 49 is the first Princess model to utilise next-generation IPS Volvo Penta internal pod-drive engines that provide a combined engine and propulsion system for increased fuel efficiency and smoother performance at high speeds. The twin Volvo IPS 550MPH engines can roar this vessel to high speeds of around the 35-knot mark on half-loads, and due to the engine’s innovative design they provide an ocean-going range some 40% greater than conventional shaft-drive engines of similar horsepower. A Bernard Olesinski-designed planing deep-v monohull in fiberglass keeps this yacht stable on rough waters and aerodynamic at pace to cut through the waves like a knife. Hydraulic trim-tabs bow thrusters and Seakeeper 5 stabilizers provide that extra level of agility and stability should you need it, while a comprehensive Garmin navigational system promotes confident chart plotting as you make your way across the seven seas.
