The Ocean Alexander 72 Pilothouse is an elegant, versatile 73.5-foot pilothouse motoryacht first released by the Taiwan-based yacht firm in 2015. Acclaimed for its luxury, volume, and performance, this Ocean Alexander yacht is designed for extended cruising, perfect for those looking to experience months-long expeditions in comfort, style, and safety – but it will also please those who prefer short, coastal getaways. With the 72 Pilothouse, owners get the best of a both worlds: a pleasure boat that looks great in dock, zipping between coastal ports before turning into a bluewater beast capable of ferrying you and your guests to faraway destinations.
Two curving staircases on either side of the swim platform lead up to the large cockpit with a long sofa and dining table, perfect for al fresco cocktails from the built-in wet bar just opposite. A large, gleaming four-paneled sliding glass door guides you into the salon. A portside wet bar invites you to mix up some cocktails to enjoy at the starboard L-shaped lounge area. The forward dining area features a long dining table that seats up to eight, ideal for more formal gatherings.
To port of the dining table and up three gentle steps is the stunning raised pilothouse – one of the widest in its class with a beam of almost 19 feet. A sociable layout encourages guests to interact with the captain or owner-operator, with an L-shaped corner sofa and dining table beneath enormous floor-to-ceiling windows. The lower helm features two big Raymarine displays and other necessary monitoring controls which are intuitively placed, making it easy to navigate. The galley is positioned behind the helm, with a central kitchen island. This is the perfect space to sociably multitask, chatting with friends while preparing food. There is substantial work and storage space here, with a huge standing fridge with drawer freezer fitted into a sturdy wood cabinet. A stainless-steel sink, microwave, cooktop and oven provide everything you need to create a gourmet feast.
The flybridge, sure to be everyone’s favorite spot, is far bigger than one would expect – even on a yacht as big as the 72 Pilothouse. Guests will flock here to enjoy the portside al fresco bar, complete with sink and refrigerator – and swing-out seats allow guests to enjoy their martinis at the bar. An optional electric grill is also available. To starboard, you’ll find the social hard of the flybridge, a stylish L-shaped sofa with a dining table, ideal for starlit dinners. Forward, the sleek upper helm is nearly identical to the lower helm, but two Stidd helm seats instead of one, ideal for a boat with a professional crew. A hardtop shelters this area from the sun while admitting fresh air and sea breeze. The large aft deck can be used to launch a 12-foot tender, but when not in use it serves as an excellent lounge area. An optional skylounge configuration is available with much the same amenities, but the forward helm and dining area is fully enclosed, with sliding doors leading to the aft deck.
A central portside staircase in the salon provides private access to the amidships owner’s suite at the bow, which features a king-sized bed with a chic upholstered headboard. Exotic wood cabinetry and soffits provide a rich contrast to the sedate, light tones of the walls and upholstery. An enormous en suite bathroom has a custom crystal shower, granite countertops, and his-and-hers china sinks. Plenty of storage for your belongings is available throughout, including two walk-in closets. A built-in vanity can be found beneath the starboard hull window. A stacked washer and dryer are hidden in a foyer at the bottom of the stairway, perfect for long-distance voyages where you want to get the most out of your wardrobe.
Access to three further cabins can be found at the forward end of the pilothouse. A double VIP suite worthy of the name features a queen island bed and an en suite bathroom with crystal shower, granite countertops, china sinks, and exotic wood accents. It also features plenty of storage concealed in the cabinetry, underbed drawers, and a cedar-lined hanging locker. A similar day head serves the other two cabins, each with two single bunk beds and a horizontal window that provides a surprising amount of natural light.
The crew quarters is located ahead of the engine room, and features a full bed nestled under the raised aft deck. A head complete with sink, shower, and toilet provides all the comforts necessary to repurpose this space for a further guest cabin. The engine room itself is immaculate and intuitively organized, with exceptional Delta T ventilation, a color-coded system for piping, and ease of access to all the systems.
The 72 Pilothouse is equipped with two standard 1150hp Caterpillar C-18 engines which allow the boat to reach top speeds upwards of 21 knots. A cruising speed of around 9-10 knots and a range of 1200nm provides a steady, efficient pace to arrive at your destination with fuel to spare.
