The Ocean Alexander 42 Altus is a 42-foot motor yacht with a flybridge produced by renowned Taiwan-based shipyard Ocean Alexander between 2003 and 2007. This sporty, entry-level model retains its allure on the used and charter markets thanks to a blend of classic, clean lines, sedate lounge spaces and dependable seaworthiness. Eschewing some of the flashier elements to be found on modern European boats, the Ed Monk Jr.-designed 42 Altus instead showcases tried-and-tested functionality, comfort and durability.
The open-air, teak-lined flybridge sits underneath an angled radar arch and boasts plenty of space to enjoy yourself while on the move. A set of leather sofas complement a wet-bar station with an electric grill, while there is room to the rear to store a modern water tender. Up front there is a centrally-located upper helm with an oversized steel steering wheel that looks like something out of the Spanish galleons of old. One level down and you will find a spacious and sheltered aft-cockpit with room for a dining table or a transom sofa while two transom doors allow access to a full-beam swimming platform and out to the side.
Curved sliding glass doors with warm timber frames lead guests into a tasteful and elegant salon that has been lined in lacquered teak and burled-wood accents with plush leather furnishings, soft carpeting, frameless windows and recessed lighting. There is a bespoke set of rounded cabinets to port and a C-shaped sofa to starboard surrounding a hi-lo timber breakfast table, while a couple of steps up and forward leads you to a spacious, walk-in galley. This port-side kitchen features black granite-effect counter-tops, a stainless-steel sink, a three-zone hob, a combination microwave oven, a dishwasher, an extractor fan and plenty of cabinet space. The galley sits across from the main-deck helm, where you will find a Raymarine display screen, thruster controls, compasses, VHF radio, trim tabs, a wooden steering wheel and a leather piloting seat.
The classic nautical feel continues on the lower deck, where oval portholes, warm timber surfaces and fine carpeting await. There is an en-suite twin cabin with a desk and a wardrobe to starboard, while an owner’s stateroom to the bow features a queen-sized island bed, a wall-mounted HDTV, a leather seat, a capacious hanging locker and a bathroom with a shower unit that doubles as a main head.
A pair of 355mhp Cummins Mercruiser 370B inboard diesels or two 440mhp Yanmar 6LY2AM engines fire the Ocean Alexander 42 Altus to top speeds of almost 26 knots, with comfortable cruising speeds clocking in at approximately 19 knots. At 10.5 knots you can expect a cruising range of 364 nautical miles, though reduce your speed another 3 knots and this extends to a horizon-busting 1546 nautical miles.
