The Back Cove 372 is a 42-foot Downeast-style cruiser that was launched by Maine’s high-end boat-building firm Back Cove in 2021. The 372 is an updated version of the popular 37 and retains the original’s heritage looks, fine craftsmanship and deluxe finish, but with a slew of new features. Upgrades include an anti-glare helm pod, lightweight electrical wiring, fixed and frameless glazing, more powerful propulsion options, aft-facing seating, an enhanced head compartment and larger MFD screens. The ideal vessel for touring the coast of New England and taking it easy in sedate style, the 372 brings the Maine tradition of lobster boats into the 21st century.
Head out onto the foredeck to enjoy peaceful angling while surrounded by high steel guardrails, or take it easy in the aft-cockpit, where two L-shaped transom seats with plush cushions and leather-effect upholstery await. Back here there’s also a set of integrated speakers ready to pipe your favorite sea shanties at full volume, an aft-facing love-seat with a flip-up, high-gloss timber drinks table, a teak flagpole and a central transom door that leads out to a hydraulic bathing platform from where you can enjoy a spot of crabbing or warm-water swims.
A glazed door leads into a handsome salon surrounded by 360-degrees of windows, warm cherrywood surrounds with maple accents, a classic teak and holly sole, spotlights and a drop down HDTV console hidden in the ceiling. A twin seat and an L-shaped family sofa surround a bespoke dining table with beveled edges and a glossy finish, while further forward there’s an open galley with a hidden steel sink, a two-zone hob, a Cuisinart combination oven, slide-out refrigeration and plenty of cabinet space. To starboard there’s a pair of elevated Llebroc helm seats clad in piped Ultraleather facing a classically-styled helm in timber with a variety of the very latest navigational tools. Expect two oversized Garmin MFD screens, Side Power bow and stern thruster controls, hand-held VHF radio, power-assisted Seastar steering and digital throttles.
A pair of couples will enjoy multi-day trips out on the water thanks to the two cabin layout on the lower-deck, where plentiful side windows and skylights allow the natural light to stream in. A double cabin to starboard is joined by a master stateroom by the bow with a queen-sized island bed and a vast cedar-lined locker, while the yacht’s main head sits to port and boasts an enclosed shower stall with a bench-seat.
You can choose between a 600HP Cummins QSC8.3 diesel or a 600HP Volvo Penta D8 engine to propel this yacht to top speeds of 28 knots and 30 knots, respectively. Ride this beauty at a cruising speed of 18 knots to enjoy 357 nautical miles of voyaging with the Cummins motor installed, or switch to the Volvo for a range of 345 miles at 18 knots, all thanks to a fuel tank holding 300 gallons. This yacht’s hull, broad at 13-feet and 3-inches, is resin-infused for a durable approach to seakeeping, while an advanced prop pocket design enhances efficiency.
