The Back Cove 34 is a 38-foot is a stunning Downeast-style cruiser launched by iconic Maine-based yacht-building company Back Cove in 2012. A timeless profile with plenty of heritage charm and classic lines boasts the look and feel of a New England lobster boat from the mid-century. Yet this up-to-date boat features powerful inboard propulsion, high-tech navigational tools and the sort of refined and deluxe finish that makes it unmistakably modern. Since replaced by its outboard-powered sister vessel the 34O, this watercraft retains its allure on the used market thanks to its high-end build-quality, durable deep-V hull and an artfully-crafted finish.
Teak brightwork and high steel guardrails lead all the way from a broad foredeck to the self-draining aft-cockpit, where you can relax for hours with friends and family at a range of seating options. A shaded aft-seat faces an L-shaped transom sofa in plush nautical-themed upholstery, while a starboard-side transom door leads out to a full-beam hydraulic swim platform perfect for casual angling, dives into the salt-water and easy reboarding. The main-deck salon is covered by a hard-top with two skylights, surrounded by wrap-around glazing and open to the rear for a breezy, elemental atmosphere. In here you can expect to find a pair of plush twin-seats surrounding a high-gloss timber dining table, as well as an open galley with solid countertops, a two-zone hob, a fridge-freezer unit, a convection microwave, plenty of secure storage and a hidden stainless-steel sink.
Up front there’s a companion seat and a comfortable Stidd helm chair with flip-up armrests facing a starboard helm station with Lenco trim-tab switches, ZF throttles, Sea Star hydraulic steering, a Side Power thruster joystick, hand-held VHF, an illuminated compass, a Cummins VesselView monitor, Simrad autopilot and a Raymarine MFD screen.
On the lower-deck there are plenty of oval portholes, a trio of skylights and a warm, cherry-lined salon with maple accents and a holly-effect sole that is large enough to boast an L-shaped lounge sofa, a wall-mounted HDTV and plenty of hidden storage. A privacy curtain separates this lower lobby from a cabin up by the bow with a double island bed and a timber-lined locker, while a starboard head compartment features a molded sink, stone-effect countertops, a flush toilet and a separate shower stall.
There’s a range of engine options available for this watercraft, with a single Cummins 380HP QSB 5.9 diesel as standard capable of reaching top speeds of up to 25 knots and cruising speeds of around 18 knots. Upgrade to a 480HP Cummins to experience top speeds of 30 knots and, at a cruising pace of 22 knots, a range of approximately 250 nautical miles thanks to a fuel tank holding 185 gallons of diesel.
