The Back Cove 32 is a classic 37-foot Downeast-style cruiser launched by the Maine-based yacht-building company Back Cove in 2016. A timeless style inspired by the New England lobster boats of a bygone age, traditional lines and a refined, high-class finish give this couple’s cruiser plenty of heritage charm – but make no mistake, this is very much a 21st century vessel. A high-powered inboard engine, the very latest in helm equipment, a reinforced hull designed by Kevin Burns and deluxe amenities throughout ensure fine seakeeping, sophisticated comfort and a dash of unmitigated luxury. Winner of the prize for “Best New Powerboat” at the 2016 New for Newport boat show, the Back Cove 32 retains its luster and popularity on the used and charter markets to this day.
Aboard this stunning craft, you can fish on the foredeck, or trace the high guardrails and teak brightwork all the way to aft for a more leisurely appeal to life at sea. In the self-bailing aft-deck, expect to find a pair of L-shaped transom sofas in sedate nautical-themed upholstery, with a glossy timber pop-up drinks table on hand to keep refreshments within easy reach. A central transom gate leads out to a swim platform perfect for enjoying the saltwater or indulging in some crabbing, while a flagpole and a cockpit shower add style and convenience, respectively.
There’s an open aspect at the rear of the main deck upper cockpit, while wraparound glazing keeps the salon feeling fresh and breezy. An open galley to starboard boasts Corian work surfaces, a steel sink, a multi-zone hob, a combination oven and a slide-out refrigerator, while to port there is a plush U-shaped dining sofa surrounding a maple-inlay table for breakfast, lunch and dinner service. A single skylight hangs above a single Arrigoni or Stidd swivel seat with a companion sofa facing a modern dashboard with goodies like a Side Power thruster joystick, a Stazo wood-grained steering wheel with Seastar hydraulics, trim-tab switches, an illuminated compass, VHF radio and MFD screens.
Down on the lower-deck there’s a teak and holly laminate sole, cherrywood surrounds and maple accents for a warm atmosphere and plenty of vintage appeal. A double cabin by the bow sits under a skylight and features plenty of hidden storage, while a head compartment to port faces an entirely separate wet-room shower with a bench seat.
Primed for action and with a fuel tank holding 185 gallons, the Back Cove 32 is designed to go quick and to go far. Standard engine options include a single 370MHP Yanmar with top speeds of 25 knots or a 370MHP Volvo Penta D6 diesel capable of breaking the 26 knot mark. If you need a bit more power than upgrade to a 435MHP Volvo Penta D6 motor or 425MHP Cummins QSB SL6.7 engine for speeds in excess of 27 knots. At cruising speeds between 15 and 17 knots these engines should deliver weekend-long cruising ranges of between 265 and 282 nautical miles.
