Overview

This vessel was built by Michael Rybovich during a period when he was operating under the corporate name as Ryco in West Palm Beach, FL.  She is hull #118 and has been named ROOK since built with only two caring owners, both who had kept her primarily in Nassau, Bahamas where she has had light usage with only a couple of voyages out of the area.  In the early summer of 2019, she was brought back to her builder, now as Michael Rybovich and Sons, where she was thoroughly refreshed with her relaunch in February 2020 sporting a totally new look being painted white with gleaming new varnish and teak (previously her hull had been black).  Further details of her updates follow in the specs.

Accommodations and Walkthrough

ROOK was designed as a dayboat, but will sleep two comfortably in her V-berth, an extra person could reasonably bunk on the settee which is 6 and a half feet long.

The air conditioned cabin is entered through a center hinged door with window at the forward side of the bridge deck.  The top of the entryway is a bi-fold hatch that hinges up which can be supported by a stainless keeper.  Down three teak non-skid steps to the cabin sole which is teak parquet and covered by bound edge, natural fiber, short pile carpeting.  Herreshoff Style interior theme with flat white panel strip walls with cherry stained mahogany cabinetry and trim, complimented by the teak steps and flooring.  Unlike many express-style boats that are dark below, Rook has hullside portlights, four to each side, that allow natural lighting combined with her white wall paneling.  This provides a comfortable, nautical feel when inside.  The headliner in the cabin is accented with mahogany trim strips and ceiling baton by the galley.  The cushions throughout the interior were made by C-Worthy and are custom Sunbrella material in Salmon color with white piping trim.  To the starboard side as one enters the cabin there is a cushioned settee/couch with mahogany drawer storage beneath and behind is a large hinged door which opens to a generous storage area.  Above this is a mahogany trimmed shelf and sliding glass doors cover a bookshelf with two hullside portlights behind.  To the aft side of the settee is a mahogany cabinet with a Bose Lifestyle stereo unit (interior) and a drawer for CD/media case storage.  A pair of dual Bose mini-cube speakers are wall mounted.

To the portside is the U-shaped galley with ButcherBlock mica countertop and mahogany fiddle railings.  Below are mahogany drawer and cabinet storage with inlayed pull handles.  Behind the aft side door is a new U-line refrigerator and above it some cubby style shelf storage.  Also above aft is a larger mahogany cabinet with shelf storage and sliding doors.  The outboard counter has a two-basin, polished stainless steel sink with faucet and the aft counter has a Princess two-burner electric Ceran glass stovetop.  Above the sink there are two sliding glass doors with etched trim that open to two white shelf storage areas and natural lighting from two portlights.  There is extra storage space under the salon steps, which each hinge up and a water tank level gauge.

Back to the starboard side, ahead of the settee is a tall mahogany door with a large storage locker.  Beneath panels in the bottom of this closet is where the air conditioning unit lives.  Across from here is the entry door to the head.  Parquet flooring with white wall paneling.  The vanity top is mahogany with a polished stainless circular sink and chrome faucet.  Above is a wood trimmed mirror with medicine cabinet behind.  A Raritan___ head is aft and there is another mahogany door cabinet below the vanity.  Forward there is a separate shower stall with Grohe wand fixture/mixer, a frosted glass enclosure door, and small seat inside.  Inside the shower stall is a frosted glass sliding door to a white towel locker and another hullside portlight.

Next forward is a doorway to the stateroom.  Immediately to the right is a full height door with hanging locker and a hullside portlight.  The stateroom has a large V-berth with mahogany drawers and cabinets beneath it.  There is a matched filler cushion that fits neatly in between to make a large full berth.  Overhead is a custom made teak deck hatch which floods the stateroom with light in addition to the two hull portlights.  The hullside liner is off-white textured wallpaper with a mahogany valance panel and trim.  There are a couple of chrome reading lights mounted on the aft wall.  All the way forward is a wood trimmed door that opens to the chain/anchor rode locker.

Back up at the entryway to the cabin, within arm’s reach of the helm deck:

To portside a new Main Electrical Panel covered by a hinged clear Lexan door with analog meters for AC volts/amps and DC volts/amp, battery/shore power monitoring, switching for Shore/Gen, generator controls, bilge pump manual switches, and AC / DC breakers.  To starboard is a mahogany cabinet, inside mounted on top on a varnished wood face, 2019 Fusion MS UD755 marine stereo with Bluetooth.  In the back of the cabinet, Two JL Audio M600 amps with 4 JL speakers mounted on the Bridgedeck, 4 in the cockpit, and 2 under the tower helm.  There is vent fan for this compartment and also other storage space, including a hand held fire extinguisher.

Bridge Deck

This entire area was refinished and repainted in white with all hardware either replaced or replated.  All the cushions were remade in 2017 and are covered in a distressed leather-look material.  The ROOK bridge deck has an amazingly comfortable arrangement with two large L-shape settees and two varnished teak tables.  The concept was to accommodate a group and even a large group meal, as there is a matching teak leaf with slide out supports beneath the two outside table to make one giant table.  The deck is surrounded by a brand new polycarb enclosure with side panels that can raise up and pin beneath the hardtop.

The helm bench seat, forward to portside, has a varnished teak ladderback style backrest with cushion that slips over top to attach.  A thick seat cushion is the seat base with a teak trim lip around the top of the console.  There is a built in helmsman’s teak foot rest just forward below the gorgeous varnished helm pod.  Beneath the inboard side of the bench is a new U-line ice cube machine.  Outboard forward in the bench is a cabinet with a glovebox drawer and open storage area below convenient for safety gear.

The helm pod has ZF single lever controls with the custom selector panel (synchronizer), just to the port of the helm, with DC electronics breakers below it.  The ICOM Vhf radio handset mic is remote mounted just outboard of here.  A Ritchie powerdamp magnetic compass is above the helm electronics console on the forward dash panel.  Engine start/stop buttons and trim tab control levers are beneath the lower edge of the helm pod.

Navigation and Electronics

All equipment has been configured and installed by Offshore Marine Electronics.  Virtually all is new in late 2019.

To the starboard side of the bridge deck is a console with center opening door that houses new appliances, a LG stainless front microwave oven and U-line drink refrigerator.  Below the microwave is a storage cubby with a handheld fire extinguisher.  This console if trimmed with a teak lip around the upper edge and a seat cushion on top.

Tower and Hardtops

In 2011, Palm Beach Towers removed an aging full tower and replaced it with a lower Marlin tower.  This tower was outfitted with Bomar hatches in the hardtop, tri-colored LED lights, custom bench seating in tower, LED spreader lights, with a 63" control box housing electronics console and an oversized sunshade to cover the seating in the tower.  The radar pod is installed on top of the sunshade to free up room on the front of the hardtop, where an offshore liferaft is mounted in a quick release cradle.  During this vessels very thorough repaint in 2019 all the tower fiberglass components and hardtops were refinished to white and the undersides of the tops were done in light blue with texture.

Tower Electronics:

·        Garmin 8610 GPS Chartplotter in network

·        Garmin GPSmap 742 Chartplotter in network

·        ICOM ram Mic Vhf

·        Fusion MS-NRX300 remote stereo control

·        ACR RCL-100 spotlight control

·        Electronics are mounted inside recessed boxes beveled towards the helm with gas shock ram supported covers that help shade the screens in bright sun.  There is also an eisenglass panel from the front of the control box to the edge of the sunshade to provide wind break.  JL Audio Stereo speakers are mounted on the underside of the control box as are the dual trumpet air horn and LED running/anchor light.

·        Ritchie magnetic compass

·        Small ZF single lever dual control binnacle and Custom chrome helm wheel

Cockpit

There is a teak cockpit with one short center step up to the helm deck. The step is teak decked and hinges open to the engine compartment. There are two beautifully refinished varnished teak cockpit center boxes, on the starboard side is a large stainless lined freezer box with inset tray for drink storage without freezing. On the portside there is a freshly rebuilt rigging station and tackle center with white solid surface counter and molded cockpit sink with faucet. Below there are two doors that open with six large drawers and a good sized open storage area. The lids on both boxes have strong moonspring keepers. Both boxes have short backrests and there are matching trolling cushions for both. Thick teak coverboards surround the cockpit with three flush rod holders to either side. Beneath the gunwales on outboard side are hinged door lockers for gaff, wash poles, and storage. There is a transom door and flip up gate which also has a custom built fold-out swim ladder with slot attachment. Beneath the deck are two hatches with a large stainless steel lined fish box with macerator pump out on one side and a live well in the other. The center of the cockpit is a new Bluewater BattleSaddle with 6 rod holders, a center tray with a tackle drawer and drink holders. Moving back towards the bridge deck there are two large drawers at the ends of the bridge deck settees which are very handy for additional tackle storage. Also the starboard teak box has a door inboard that has narrow storage compartments where coiled rigs could be stored nicely. There are also fresh and saltwater washdown spigots.

Fishing Equipment

·         Rupp triple spreader silver outriggers are mounted on the hardtop

·         Rupp center rigger

·         Dual Birdsall Marine pancake-style teaser reels mounted under the tower sunshade

·         Three clear-out rod holders on each rear tower leg

·         Five rocket launcher rod holders along the lower rear rail of the tower

·         The tower bench seat backrest can fold down to clear the captain’s cockpit vision

Hull and Deck

Unique two level bowrail is a combination of the classic custom hoop rail with burgee mast and a lower extension back towards the deckhouse.  It is satin finished pipe with polished/painted welds and the stanchion bases fasten right into the teak toe railing.  The bow is non-skid finished and has a stylish crown pitch.  In the center is a teak deck hatch with chrome bezeled tinted window also with that matching curved pitch.  All the deck hardware is perfectly chromed or new and the bow has fairleads and chafe strips neatly bedded on the varnished toe rail with two cleats set just behind.  There is a spring covered hawser pipe to access the anchor chain and rode.  There is a good sized Fortress stored in the aft lazarette.  There are also mid-ship spring cleats with chafe strips and safety railings on the deck sides just below the hardtop.

Moving back to the deckhouse there is a fixed windshield and an electric wiper on the helmsman’s pane.  Between the line of the curved windows and the finish of the teak deckhouse there is not much that compares to ROOK on style points.  There is a new enclosure which is a combination of polycarbonate and Strataglas nicely tailored by Canvas Designers.  New chrome strike railing around the boat with lower splash rails from the transom up to the beginning of the deckhouse.  A new teak transom accentuates the tumblehome feature and the red, white, and blue boot stripe with the gold leaf lettering is timeless.

There is a canvas dockside cockpit shade/canopy with stainless support poles that fit into the rear rod holders.

There are canvas covers for almost everything.  A full set for the deckhouse windows, a cover for the forward deck hatch, a full cockpit cover from back of the hardtop to the rubrail on three sides, a transom cover, covers for the cockpit teak boxes, cover for the BattleSaddle, coco mat style mat runner for the bridge deck.  Also there are canvas runners for inside the cabin.
