It was Lorenzo Benetti, patriarch of the family, who first decided to build wooden fishing boats and sail ships at a shipyard in Viareggio in 1873. By the end of the 19th century the company had transitioned toward making larger commercial vessels and boats for the Italian Royal Marines, a feat that was captured on film by the pioneering Lumière brothers, one of the first times in the history of cinema that a shipyard was recorded on camera.
