After announcing two exciting new models this year in the Viking 82 Convertible and the Valhalla 55 Sport Yacht, the leading sportfish manufacturer in the world has done it again. Viking Yachts announced the brand-new 74 Convertible today, described as a champion destined for greatness. If Viking's past success with the beloved 72 Convertible is any indication of what to expect with the 74C, tournament anglers should be very excited.
“When you’re building a better boat every day, there’s no resting on your laurels,” says Viking President and CEO Pat Healey, who introduced the 82 on the company’s 60th anniversary of April 1st. “We just keep designing and refining to develop fresh new models for our owners.”
"The Viking 72 was an absolute beast with an impressive 45-knot top speed," said Rich Lucas, the Viking brand manage for SI Yachts. "The new 74C will have similar cruising and WOT speeds, which will catapult it to the top of Viking's fleet in terms of speed."

WHAT'S DIFFERENT ABOUT THIS VERSION OF THE 74 CONVERTIBLE?
Computational Fluid Dynamics software helps the team achieve performance goals through a series of refinements. For instance, the 74’s strakes and chines are particularly aggressive for increased spray deflection and lift, and the boat’s length-to-beam ratio was dialed in for excellent ride quality.
In comparison, the Gen I Viking 74 – built from 2004 through 2008 – had a top speed of 37 knots with twin 2000HP MTUs. That jumped to 40 knots when the 2400HP engines became available. Today’s 74 has the advantage of more horsepower (2600HP MTUs) and hull design improvements. In addition, it’s available with the Advanced Viking Propulsion System (AVPS), which utilizes struts and rudders with modified or “twisted” shapes that minimize hydrodynamic resistance, improving performance.
WHAT FISHING FEATURES WILL BE ON THE NEW 74C?
The first thing to discuss when it comes to what features anglers will like on the new Viking 74C will always begin with the cockpit. The cockpit on the new 74 is nearly a foot longer than the 72 Convertible and has 216 square feet to do battle with legendary marlin. Here are some of the features you will see:
WHAT WILL THE FLYBRIDGE BE LIKE ON THE 74 CONVERTIBLE?
The 74’s flybridge is designed with a 7-inch-high platform at the helm, which provides excellent cockpit visibility for the captain. The walkaround center console’s recessed black acrylic dash holds flush-mounted multifunction displays. The helm is clean, streamlined and operator-friendly with dual radio boxes with split lids housing instrumentation and controls, a helm pod, single lever electronic controls and a stainless-steel steering wheel. Air conditioning can be added to the helm, as well, which accommodates three Release Marine helm chairs with teak ladder backs.
The console’s forward section is home to an integrated full-length lounge with a standard freezer below. There are also standard dual freezers forward – a feature carried down from the 82 – to allow separate storage of different baits and/or food. The forward flybridge is equipped with a convenient sink and refrigerated drink box. Seating modules to port and starboard each hold back-to-back lounges with storage underneath.
DOES THE NEW VIKING 74 HAVE A SPACIOUS SALON?
With a nearly 20-foot beam on the new Viking 74, the interior living spaces on board will be comfortable and provide ample room for longer fishing trips with multiple friends or crew. After stepping through the electric sliding door found on the port-side of the boat, the salon is a welcoming, bright, and spacious living room on the water complete with a HDTV that electrically raises from its dedicated cabinet.
The salon is decorated in a horizontal-grain natural walnut that is available in both satin and high-gloss finishes. The joinery and dove-tail drawers add to the ambiance and sense of quality. There is a large sofa with rod storage underneath and a hi-lo table made of walnut. Additional rod storage is found in the large drawer beneath the raised dinette and walnut table.
The galley is designed and equipped to feed a hungry crew for days during offshore tournaments. The galley is offered in two configurations: The standard U-shaped layout allows for a larger wraparound lounge, while the optional open galley features an island counter and is open to the lounge on the starboard side. With either arrangement, the galley has two under-counter refrigerators and one freezer (all Sub-Zero) with ample countertop space and a second dining area with a raised bar and three stools. Galley highlights include Amtico flooring, a Miele four-burner electric cooktop (with optional conventional oven), a stainless-steel sink, a microwave/convection oven, a trash compactor, upper and lower cabinetry and drawer storage. A pantry forward of the galley provides additional storage.
WHAT KIND OF ACCOMMODATIONS DOES THE VIKING 74 HAVE?
What separates Viking from other sportfishing yachts? Aside from the performance and standard fishing features, the interior of a Viking closely resembles a luxury cruising yacht. Many Viking owners cruise their boats when not fishing and the comfort-level is second to none.
"As with all Vikings, you have different options for accommodations on board," continued Rich. "The standard accommodations include a 4-stateroom layout, each with their own en suite head. The forepeak layout also features a standard rod and tackle room, located on the port side."
The crew quarters can be accessed via a separate staircase at the foot of the companionway stairs or through a forward engine room door. The spacious master stateroom features a king walkaround bed with storage underneath, two oak-lined hanging closets and space for up to a 65-inch HD TV on the forward bulkhead.
WHAT POWER OPTIONS ARE ON THE VIKING 74?
The new Viking 74 Convertible comes standard with MAN V-12 1550MHP engines, however more options are available. Here are all of the different optional power configurations you can order:
The engine room – finished in Snow White Awlgrip for easier maintenance – is a marvel of marine engineering. It’s equipped with chilled water air conditioning, ventilation and fire suppression systems, a pair of 29 kW generators with voltage and electronic frequency control and is engineered for the installation of omnidirectional sonar. Optional equipment such as water makers and water purifiers and ice machines are expertly installed in the engine room as well.
The standard SeaStrong seal-less pumps in our Centralized Seawater System reduce complexity and increase reliability and component longevity throughout the boat. The 74 is also offered with the CLEARLINE System, which uses chlorinated water to prevent marine growth in seawater plumbing lines.
WILL THE VIKING 74 COME IN OTHER MODEL VARIATIONS?
Like most Viking models, the new 74 Convertible will have two other optional variations to choose from - a Viking 74 Enclosed Bridge and a 74 Skybridge. The 74 Enclosed Bridge model can come with or without a tuna tower. All Viking towers are designed and built by their subsidiary company, Palm Beach Towers.
