The premier destination in the Show-Me State is undoubtedly the Lake of the Ozarks, a 54,000-acre reservoir with around 1,150 miles of shoreline nestled in the scenic Ozarks highland range. This lake’s serpentine form has earned it the moniker “the Missouri Dragon”, and its combination of fun boating, tremendous beauty and vast reach attract more than 5 million visitors per year. Popular boating spots here include Party Cove, known to host up to 3,000 boats at a time during peak season, the 200-slip Millstone Marina and the upmarket marina at the Lodge of the Four Seasons resort. The lake also offers excellent fishing, particularly for large catfish, gizzard shard, paddlefish and carp. If visiting this area in late August check the dates for the annual Lake of the Ozarks Shootout powerboat race for high-octane action. But Lake of the Ozarks is not the only reservoir destination in Missouri, as the 43,000-acre Table Rock Lake also attracts the crowds by the millions. The biggest marina on this breathtaking waterway is the Table Rock State Park Marina, a 650-slip, full-service facility perfect for motorboating and sailing.
Once upon a time the two powerful rivers that course their way through Missouri, its namesake river and the Mississippi, used to be thronged with traditional steamboats. These days you are more likely to find motorboats, kayaks and sailboats entering the river via hundreds of boat ramps and jetties to glide past steep gorges, wide floodplains and impressive cities like college town Columbia, Gateway to the West St. Louis and rapidly growing Kansas City.
Missouri weighs in with a boating industry worth over $6.3 billion per year, supporting over 23,000 jobs. Prominent boat-builders located here include the White River Marine Group. Owned by Bass Pro Shops, this firm is the world’s largest builder of recreational and fishing boats by volume under brand-names like Ranger Boats, Triton Boats, Sun Tracker, Tahoe and Nitro Performance Fishing Boats. There’s also a healthy boat-building community in laid-back Lebanon that includes aluminum boat producers like Lowe and Landau Boats.
