The Magnolia State is home to one of the most unique boating destinations in the United States, the enchanting Mississippi Delta. Framed by the Mississippi and Yazoo Rivers, this serene and atmospheric destination covers 7,000 square miles of slow, moody rivers, misty bottomlands, alluvial swamp and winding waterways with a distinct cultural heritage showcasing the best of Southern hospitality. Drop a line for catfish and bass, take a steamboat upstream, lose yourself in the brackish swamplands, explore this region’s rich and complicated history, and drop in at waterfront bars to listen to some authentic Delta Blues. While there, check out top fishing destinations like Wolf Lake or Bee Lake, tour the Yazoo right into the heart of the Delta National Forest, or get out onto the water on the 1,500 floodplain and oxbow lakes concentrated here.
The Ross R. Barnett Reservoir close to bustling Jackson is a 24,000-acre lake that is popular with day boaters and fishers looking to hook bream and gar, with 22 boat launches direct onto the water. The biggest lake in Mississippi is Grenada Lake, a 35,000-acre lake with 16 boat ramps that is popular with watersports enthusiasts and crappie fishers.
Not only is the state’s southern coast lined with some of the Gulf’s finest beaches and resorts, but it also boasts an array of large, full-service marinas with direct access offshore. One of the largest marinas in this part of the world is the Point Cadet Marina with 246 slips, a dry storage hangar and a position close to Biloxi’s amenities. The 214-slip Bay Saint Louis Municipal Harbor and the 163-slip Pass Christian Harbor sit at opposite ends of the Bay Saint Louis Bridge, and are ideally positioned for beach access and boating out to the Gulf Islands National Seashore, home to five sandy isles, as well as bluewater fishing for kingfish or Spanish mackerel. Another full-service option on the southern coast is the Bert Jones Yacht Harbor that sits alongside Downtown Gulfport and boasts 319 slips. The oldest yacht clubs in the state include the Biloxi and Pass Christian yacht clubs, both dating from 1849 and known for their regattas and racing events.
This state features a competitive boating industry, and was formerly home to American yacht-building titan Trinity Yachts. These days some of the most prominent brands include Sea Cat Boats, makers of high-speed hybrid catamarans, as well as builders of aluminum fishing craft Avid Boats.
