One of the largest marinas in Minnesota sits on the upper reaches of the Mississippi in Red Wing next to the Wisconsin border. Ole Miss Marina offers 284 slips between two sites with direct access out onto Lake Papin, one of the most popular lakes in the state for sailing and leisure boating. Another premier destination is Lake Minnetonka, a 14,528-acre lake defined by a series of picturesque coves and inlets that sits just 16 miles outside of Minneapolis. The biggest marina on this scenic lake is the Tonka Bay Marina, a full-service facility with over 200 slips and off-site winter storage. For conviviality and a traditional, family-friendly atmosphere head to the Minnetonka Yacht Club. Founded in 1882, this is America’s oldest yacht club outside of the Atlantic Seaboard, home to an Olympic gold medalist, world champion sailors and is the organizer of numerous regattas. If you wish to get away from it all then head to Lake Vermillion, an isolated 40,000-acre lake with 365 islands, one for every day of the year. Up here you can fish for walleye, muskie and panfish while surrounded by the stark beauty of Minnesota’s northern forests.
The largest marina on Lake Superior is Park Point Marina in Duluth, while Spirit Lake Marina grants access to both Superior and the St Louis River. For a wilder and more remote boating experience out on the lake then head to Grand Marais Harbor near the Canadian border for a natural safe harbor, plentiful slips and the chance to land coaster brook trout.
Today’s popular pontoon boat was invented in Richmond, Minnesota back in 1952, while 30 years earlier Ralph Samuelson invented the concept of waterskiing out on Lake Pepin, demonstrating this state’s rich watersports and boating heritage. Recreational boating in the North Star State now generates revenues of more than $6 billion dollars annually, supporting almost 26,000 jobs across 700 businesses. Premier Marine, based here, is one of the nation’s largest pontoon manufacturers, building around 5,000 boats per year. Other popular brands located here include wake surf boat producers Varatti Boats and Lund Boats, purveyor of aluminum fishing boats and one of America’s biggest marine corporations with over $250 million dollars of sales per year.
