The Peach State’s rich maritime heritage is on full display in the beautiful and historic city of Savannah, where vintage charm and a laid-back, sultry atmosphere draw in the crowds. Popular marinas here include the 140-slip Savannah Marina on Wilmington Island, superyacht-ready Savannah Harbor Marina near Downtown, and picturesque Isle of Hope Marina, famously depicted in 1961 classic movie Cape Fear. From these venues you can sail direct towards the ocean for peaceful offshore exploration and adrenalin-heavy fishing, or leisurely explore marshy wetlands such as Wassaw Island in your bay-boat, that teems with wildlife like peregrine falcons, herons and alligators. Atlantic access is also available via Brunswick Landing Marina in the south of the state, where 380 wet slips and 100 dry slips await.
For some of the finest inland boating and sailing in the nation make an excursion to Lake Lanier or Lake Allatoona, both located a short drive north of Atlanta, where you will find vast stretches of perfectly still water, captivating rural surrounds, plentiful marina access and a welcoming vibe. Combine your visit here with a stay at Lanier Islands Resort, a plush getaway for Atlanta locals, or pay your respects at the historic Allatoona Pass Battleground, site of a major Civil War encounter. Alternatively, tack your way down the atmospheric Altamaha River, the state’s largest by water flow and once a major trading route. Nowadays the steamboats have been replaced by outboards, rowing boats and the river’s very own mythical monster, the Altie.
If you are looking to connect with other boaters then head to the Savannah Yacht Club to experience old-style southern hospitality. Founded in 1869, this is one of America’s oldest yachting institutions and boasts a family-friendly, if rather exclusive, atmosphere. Or check out Valdosta Yacht Club near the Florida border, which hosts an annual State Snipe Championship each March.
The boating sector in this state is worth an estimated $7.8 billion, supports over 27,000 jobs and hosts exciting industry events like the Savannah Superyacht Experience and the Atlanta Boat Show. Boat manufacturers building in-state include Polar Fishing Boats, crafters of swift center-console boats, and Prodigy Boats, who specialise in aluminium fishing vessels.
